UMCU DONATES $5,000 TO FOOD GATHERERS WITH THE HELP OF 14 LOCAL BUSINESSES

ANN ARBOR, MI (January 31, 2017) – The University of Michigan Credit Union (UMCU) recently presented a check of $5,000 to Food Gatherers, a Washtenaw County-based nonprofit organization. This donation was made possible with the help of 14 local businesses during UMCU’s “Shop Local, Give Local” campaign.

Through the months of October to December, UMCU matched and donated one percent of the total sales to Food Gatherers, when members made purchases with their UMCU Visa credit cards at participating stores.

Local businesses that helped make this donation possible include Found Gallery, Spun, Rock Paper Scissors, The Peaceable Kingdom, Cherry Republic, Performance Bicycle, Underground Printing, Moe’s Sport Shop, Bo’s, Collected Works, Vault of Midnight, Puffer Reds, Café Rhema and Complete Runner.

“The nice thing about Ann Arbor is being in daily contact with the people making a difference. We were excited when UMCU approached us to join “Shop Local, Give Local” because Food Gatherers isn’t some anonymous charity, the community knows them. They are one of the best nonprofits in the country,” said Pete Sickman-Garner, Spun co-owner.

The purpose of UMCU’s “Shop Local, Give Local” campaign was to help Food Gatherers alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in the community. As the only local credit union in Ann Arbor, UMCU wanted to raise awareness about this mission and invite its members and the community to help make a positive impact.

“UMCU is incredibly grateful for the support of our members and the local business owners who participated in this campaign. We strive to give back to the community and this donation to Food Gatherers was only possible with the help of our community,” said Tiffany Ford, UMCU President and CEO.
