Some Ann Arbor locals (Full disclosure: Concentrate's managing editor Jeff Meyers is one of them) have decided to take cultural matters into their own hands and help seed the ground for local awesomeness. Local Group Battles Illiteracy to Build a Stronger Michigan

(Excerpted from Washtenaw Literacy) In Washtenaw County, statistics point to an illiteracy rate of 12%, about 27,000 citizens. Washtenaw Literacy matches adult learners with trained volunteers who provide individual and group tutoring in reading and writing skills.
