The economic climate of Michigan is constantly changing. It can often be difficult to keep up with the current challenges facing the state. This why we are pleased to announce that SPARK’s CEO, Paul Krutko, will be a recurring monthly guest on the Michigan Business Beat radio show. He’ll be bringing his 30 years of experience into conversations on economic opportunities in the region.

The show is hosted by Chris Holman, and regularly highlights success stories from around the state in the world of business and finance. It’s also focused on discussing solutions to the challenges facing Michigan’s economy, from technology to manufacturing.

Paul’s first and second interviews with the Michigan Business Beat were in September and October. He spoke about recruiting new senior talent into SPARK, and the fresh perspectives they are bringing into the organization. Other topics include MichAgain, SPARK’s upcoming talent attraction event in San Jose, CA. The event is aimed at attracting Michigan alums back to the Great Lakes State. He also spoke about the upcoming Deals of the Year awards and the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition. These topics are just the tip of the iceberg, so be sure check out the recording for yourself here. Check back with us later in November for Paul’s next interview!

The downtown Ann Arbor hair salon featured as one of ELLE magazine’s top 100 salons in the U.S. for 2009 and 2010 is getting a new ‘do. Salon Vox recently purchased the basement and first two floors of its locale at 115 W. Liberty Street. The five-year-old salon has occupied the basement and first floor of the building. With the addition of the second floor, the new footprint will be 5,400 square feet, a 50% increase in size. The extra level means the number of styling stations will go from 12 to 24, says Jeniffer Hepler, owner of Salon Vox. Hepler also plans to open an onsite cosmetology academy for existing and new stylists. The 22-employee salon will be hiring as a result of the expansion. She declines to disclose project cost figures or an expected number of new jobs. In a down or flat-lining economy, hairstyling is often one of the first discretionary items to be cut; however, Hepler says, business has remained unaffected throughout. The salon focuses on different equipment, updated styles, and continuing education, she says. She also attributes its success to active involvement in the Main Street Area Association and a downtown location. “We focus on a lot of the young professionals in the area, and so they still come down for work and then are able to come get a haircut,” Hepler explains. Many salons close between 5 and 7 p.m. on weekdays, but Salon Vox is open until 9 p.m. all week. Thursdays are late nights; doors are open until midnight and a DJ spins. An 11th hour haircut!? “Oh my goodness, we’re booked!” she laughs. “We’ve done that since we’ve opened, so it’s been a great success.” Source: Jeniffer Hepler, owner of Salon Vox Writer: Tanya Muzumdar

Though investment in new businesses isn't the target of the senator's proposal, it would cause collateral damage to the way informal investors finance companies

Have you seen or heard about Senator Christopher Dodd’s Financial Reform Bill and the provisions regarding angel funding? There is an excellent article in Business Week about the provision that would increase the requirements of an individual to qualify as an accredited investor. It would take out an estimated 40% of people who qualify today from being able to make a sophisticated investment in a promising new technology-based business.

Furthermore the legislation would allow states for the first time to set their own regulations on security laws. What a nightmare that would be given that most innovative, high-growth, high-need start-ups raise money from people in more than one state. Also it would add yet another bit of red tape for the entrepreneur to have to learn about and maneuver through. Don’t we make it hard enough for entrepreneurs to work through all the rules and regulations already at the start-up phase? How difficult do we want to make it to start a business? Come on, these are the very people we’ve agreed will drive new employment and diversify our economy.

Write your senators and ask them not to support this portion of Senator Dodd’s bill.

It talks about angel investing and the need for more angels in Michigan. They highlight two important people in this space, Rick Galdi and Terry Cross. Great testimonials from these guys. The reporter did a good job contacting several people involved with the angel community who know the importance of developing a strong angel base of investors to really help our entrepreneurs get this economy going again.

Other pieces in the article talk about the proposed new state tax credit and Ann Arbor SPARK’s experimental educational program. This topic is getting some momentum. If you know of someone who is interested in learning more about being an angel have them call me.

You might be surprised to find yourself in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The city is like a life preserver, floating in a state whose economy has been sinking for a decade. Across the country, cities like Ann Arbor, homes to big public universities, are well-positioned to survive economic downturns. They bring in tens of thousands of students, all with money saved, earned and borrowed in other places to be spent right here.”
